Myth: Only experts can prevent suicide.
Fact: Suicide prevention is everybody’s business and anyone can help prevent the tragedy of suicide.

Myth: Those who talk about suicide don’t do it.
Fact: People who talk about suicide may try or even contemplate an act of self-destruction.

Myth: No one can stop suicide: it’s inevitable.
Fact: If people in a crisis get the help they need, they will probably never be suicidal again.

Myth: Confronting a person about suicide will only make them angry and increase the risk of suicide.
Fact: Asking someone about suicide intent lowers anxiety, opens up communication and lowers the risk of an impulsive act.

Myth: Suicidal people keep their plans to themselves.
Fact: Most suicidal people communicate their intent sometime during the week preceding that attempt.

Myth: People who talk about suicide are just seeking attention.
Fact: We should treat all suicide information seriously and not make assumptions.

Myth: Once a person decides to complete suicide, there is nothing anyone can do to stop them.
Fact: We can help to prevent suicide and almost any positive action may save a life.

Myth: Suicidal people always want to die.
Fact: Many suicidal people want to live better and happier lives, even while they are stating that they want to die. What they are really saying is they need help and relief from the intense emotional pain they are experiencing.

Myth: If someone seems to make a quick recovery after a very low time, I can stop worrying.
Fact: A sudden behavioural swing can mean that the person has resolved to suicide. The decision makes them seem happier and more peaceful. More meaningful signs of recovery than a sudden behavioural change are needed.
