Victoria Mills

My angel Victoria was born at 1:10pm on January 10 1989 in Gosford NSW after a mad dash on the freeway followed by a police escort to the hospital as she was so eager to get here! She was an amazing baby; it was almost as though she had been here before. I have distinct memories of her sitting propped up on the couch at only a few weeks of age, scanning the room and watching Home and Away as though she’d seen it all before! She was a placid baby who slept through the night almost immediately. She amazed me right from the beginning and began walking at 10 months and 10 days. She was a very fast learner and talker and by the age of two was articulately describing her days adventures.
She was a gorgeous child in both appearance and in spirit and would watch her favourite movies over and over again until she’d memorised them. She loved climbing trees and we were fortunate enough to have a huge liquid amber tree in our front yard, which Victoria made use of constantly. She really was a little monkey with no fear!
At the age of 8 she discovered the Spice Girls and her love of music was born. She listened to music constantly throughout her life and amazed me by being one of the first people I know to download music from the internet. She amassed a huge collection of music and it was one of her joys in life.
She completed 5 years of Drama training from the age of eight to 13 and we were all very proud of her achievements and loved watching her perform. She had a fantastic sense of humour which only got better as she got older. She was hilarious with impersonations and her creativity. She really was an entertainer at home and sang and danced around the house constantly, which I loved. When she was around 10 she insisted that we make up a dance together that we had to perform several times each evening. I can still recall parts of it as it has been so firmly impressed in my mind!
She was a fantastic roller blader and iceskater and she did these regularly. She was intelligent beyond her years and her common sense and maturity constantly amazed me, even when she was young it often felt like I was talking with someone closer to my own age! We had a very close relationship and at times I felt she was more like my best friend than my precious bub.
In 2000 we moved to Tasmania and this began a difficult stage in her life. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes shortly after arriving, yet amazed me with her bravery and courage in coming to terms with the condition and its management.
Our relationship was intense, beautiful and special and I am honoured to have been chosen as Victoria’s mother. Though she was only here for such a short time she has left an indelible mark on me and all of those who loved her. Victoria taught me the true meaning of unconditional, unending love and spiritual belief and her essence will remain in my heart, mind and soul forever.
